The SLM lingual arch is a custom-made orthodontic component designed for use within the lower dental arch. The construction is produced using selective laser melting technology, which enables highly accurate reproduction of the digital design and precise adaptation of the arch configuration to the patient’s anatomical conditions.

At KarDent, SLM lingual arches are designed using working models or intraoral scans submitted by the clinician. Each construction is prepared individually, in accordance with the prescribed treatment objectives and the technical requirements of the specific case.

Digital design of the lingual arch

The manufacturing process begins with an assessment of the digital documentation or working model. At this stage, the arch configuration, its relationship to the lingual tooth surfaces, the extent of the construction and the method of anchorage are defined.

Digital design enables precise control of:

  • the arch configuration in relation to the teeth,
  • the thickness and geometry of the component,
  • the support and anchorage points,
  • the distance between the construction and the soft tissues,
  • the areas intended for connection to the remaining appliance components.

This makes it possible to create a construction adapted to the individual case without relying exclusively on prefabricated solutions.

SLM technology – precision and repeatability

SLM technology enables the manufacture of a metal component with a consistent structure and highly accurate reproduction of the digital design. Compared with conventional manual wire bending, the digital workflow provides greater control over the shape, configuration and stability of the construction.

This technology is particularly useful in cases where the following factors are important:

  • accurate adaptation,
  • stable positioning of the arch,
  • repeatable manufacturing,
  • integration with other custom-made metal components,
  • a digital workflow based on intraoral scans.

Following production, the component is processed, finished and prepared for the next stage of assembly in accordance with the appliance design.

The SLM lingual arch may be manufactured as an individual orthodontic component or as part of a more complex appliance. Depending on the clinician’s prescription, different construction variants and methods of connection to the anchorage components may be incorporated.

SLM lingual arches are manufactured using working models, impressions or intraoral scans. Within the digital workflow, we prepare the CAD design and subsequently manufacture the component using SLM technology.

  • information regarding the intended extent of the construction,
  • the required method of anchorage,
  • additional instructions concerning the arch configuration,
  • details of any associated components.
